The feature image of this post was made by Thea Arnman for Season 21, Episode 11 of the NoSleep Podcast.
Eight years after my short, “Aixa the Hexcaster,” was published at Mirror Dance Fantasy, I have finally been published again.
This time, however, it’s a Sci-Fi/Horror short that was fully voice-acted on the NoSleep Podcast:
“A Facet of That Faceless Death,” a story I started back in 2023, just got published today in an episode jam-packed with a bunch of awesome horror stories.
Before I continue though, I do want to make it clear that my story is on the premium end of the podcast. That means that if you want to listen to “A Facet of That Faceless Death” right now, you would need to get at least a $5 membership to NoSleep. Also–because I’ve already gotten the question–no, I don’t get a kickback on memberships to NoSleep, but they did pay me actual, real-life, market-rate money for my story. So if you got a NoSleep membership, you’d be supporting a podcast that’s actually paying indie writers and publishing their work, fully voice-acted and beautifully produced. That’s an awesome thing–especially in this, our darkest timeline, where AI writing still looms. Seriously, NoSleep just gave me and a bunch of other writers an awesome, supremely-uplifting opportunity, and they do that multiple times a month, every month. So supporting them with $5 for a month of highly-produced horror shorts feels like a great call to me.
That said, if you can’t afford the membership, I understand; I’m right there with you. In a few months, when the exclusivity for this story ends, I will post a written transcript of it here on the site and/or try to get a transcript of it reprinted somewhere else where it’s accessible for free.
Okay. That said, hearing one of your short stories performed by a professional voice actor is wild.
My story was voiced by Mike DelGaudio who does the most intense job I could ever imagine with the narration. He makes the protagonist gravelly, creepy, and eerily, bitterly consigned to their fate in a way that’s just perfect. Absolutely amazing.
Also, the production is so good. Audio effects are used to create the eerie setting around you, of course, but on top of that, filters are used on the narrator’s voice at some perfect moments to elevate the concept. And the very end of the story was executed exactly the way I imagined it.
Killer. It’s so good.
If you have the time and a spare $5, I recommend checking it out.
Until next time, thanks for reading and remember that no matter how impossible it seems, yes, you can get published. AI didn’t destroy everything–it can still happen! Don’t give up!
I finally have another publishing credit to put in query letters!!
